About Basildon
Basildon is one of the biggest towns in south Essex, around 27 miles east of central London and 11 miles south of Chelmsford, with a population of about 116,000. It is one of the original post-war New Towns, designated in 1949 to rehouse London families, and it absorbed the older communities of Laindon, Pitsea and Vange as it grew. Much of that land had been plotland: self-built bungalows on strips of farmland sold off cheaply from the late Victorian years onwards, a story kept alive at the Langdon nature reserve on the western edge of town. The centre that replaced it holds the Eastgate Shopping Centre, the open-air East Walk, the Towngate Theatre and the 1960s Brooke House tower standing over the Town Square.
The town earns its living as well as commutes. Tractors have been built here since Ford opened its plant in 1964, today under the New Holland name, and Ford's Dunton technical centre sits on the western edge. Three stations, Basildon, Laindon and Pitsea, run c2c services directly into London Fenchurch Street. Gloucester Park holds the Basildon Sporting Village with its Olympic-sized pool and athletics track, and Wat Tyler Country Park at Pitsea reaches down towards the creeks. Housing runs from the first corporation neighbourhoods at Fryerns and Barstable through to modern private estates, with regeneration ongoing across several parts of the borough.
