Electric Garage Doors in Essex

RollRite supply and fit electric roller garage doors across Essex, made to measure for your opening and installed by our own team from Sible Hedingham. Press the remote and the insulated aluminium curtain rolls up into a compact box above the opening, so nothing swings out over the drive and the ceiling inside stays clear. Free on-site survey, fixed written quote, most single doors fitted in one visit.

How an Electric Roller Garage Door Works

The door is a curtain of interlocking, foam-filled aluminium slats. A tubular motor sits inside the roll at the top of the opening and winds the curtain up into a slim housing, then lowers it back down the guide rails fixed to each side of the brick reveal. Everything is made to the exact width and height of your opening, so there are no gaps around the edges and the door runs smoothly from day one.

On remote control packages a safety edge along the bottom slat reverses the door if it meets anything on the way down, and the door locks automatically every time it closes. There is no external handle to force and no exposed panel edge to get a bar behind.

  • Motor, curtain, guide rails and housing supplied as one made-to-measure door
  • Remote control or external key switch operation, depending on the package
  • Safety edge and automatic locking on every remote control package
  • Manual override on every door for use in a power cut
  • Quiet operation with a soft start and stop

Why Essex Homeowners Go Electric

Open It From the Car

Press the remote as you turn into the drive and the door is up before you reach it. No getting out in the rain to lift a heavy door.

Park Right Up to the Door

The curtain rolls straight up into its box. An up-and-over door has to swing out first, so the car must sit back on the drive.

Locks Itself Every Time

Automatic locking engages as the door closes, and anti-lift protection holds the curtain in its guides against force from outside.

Insulated Slats

Every slat is double walled with a foam core, which cuts draughts and takes the chill off the biggest opening in the garage.

Made to Measure

Standard opening or an odd size, the door is manufactured to your measurements. Nothing is squeezed in or packed out.

Fitted by Our Own Team

Survey, supply, installation and aftercare are all handled by RollRite, never passed to a third party.

One Door, Three Names

Electric, Automatic or Automated

Some people search for electric garage doors, others for automatic or automated garage doors, and a few for a motorised or remote control garage door. They all mean the same thing: a door driven by a motor rather than lifted by hand. Every door RollRite fit is an electric roller door, and the words on the quote are the same whichever one you used to find us.

The choice that actually matters is the slat profile. The 55mm profile suits standard single garages up to about 2.6 metres wide, with a compact housing that fits under a low lintel. The 77mm profile uses a thicker slat for double garages and exposed openings up to around 5 metres, with better wind resistance and more insulation. The 55mm comes in 16 powder-coated colours (23 on the RollRite 55 Premium) and the 77mm in 14, all with woodgrain finishes, which you can browse on the garage door colours page.

Upgrading From a Manual Garage Door

Most of the electric garage doors we fit in Essex replace an old up-and-over or side-hinged door that has become heavy, noisy or unreliable. The old door, frame, tracks and springs come out first, the opening is cleared and checked, then the new guide rails, housing and curtain go in. The motor is wired to a socket, the limits are set, any safety edge is tested and any remotes are programmed before we hand over.

A roller door needs roughly 75mm of clear wall each side of the opening for the guide rails and between 205mm and 300mm of headroom above it for the housing, which is why a manual door in a garage with limited headroom can usually be replaced without any building work. Our real before and after case study shows what the swap looks like on a typical Essex garage.

The Electrics

Power Supply and Power Cuts

The motor plugs into an ordinary 13-amp socket inside the garage, the same type you would use for a kettle or a lawnmower. No three-phase supply and, in most homes, no fuse board work. Where a garage has never been wired, a qualified electrician fits a socket before installation day and we brief them on exactly where it needs to be. The power requirements guide covers running costs and the options for a detached garage with no supply.

In a power cut the manual override lets you open and close the door by hand from inside, and an external override is available where the garage has no other way in. The remotes run on ordinary replaceable batteries.

Electric Garage Door FAQs

How much does an electric garage door cost in Essex?

A fully fitted RollRite electric roller garage door starts from £1,275 including VAT for a 55mm door with key switch operation. Remote control packages with a safety edge start from £1,475, and the heavier 77mm doors for wider openings start from £1,790. A 5-metre wide 77mm door is typically around £3,000 fully fitted. All prices include VAT. The cost calculator gives a guide price for your own width in a couple of minutes, and the free survey confirms it as a fixed written quote.

Is an electric garage door the same as an automatic garage door?

Yes. Electric, automatic and automated all describe the same thing: a garage door driven by a motor rather than lifted by hand. Every RollRite door is an electric roller door, with the motor housed inside the roll at the top of the opening and operated from a remote control or an external key switch depending on the package.

Does an electric garage door need special wiring?

No. The motor runs from a standard 13-amp mains socket inside the garage, positioned close to the top corner of the opening. Most garages that already have power need no electrical work at all. If your garage has no supply, a qualified electrician fits a socket before installation day, and we tell you exactly where it should go at the free survey.

What happens to an electric garage door in a power cut?

Every RollRite door includes a manual override, so you can open and close the door by hand when the electricity is off. An external manual override is available as an optional extra for garages with no other way in. When the power returns the door works normally from the remote or key switch.

Can you replace my manual up-and-over door with an electric roller door?

Yes, this is the most common job we do. The old up-and-over door, its frame, tracks and springs come out, the opening is cleared and the new made-to-measure roller door is fitted in its place. Most single doors are finished in one visit, typically within half a day, and the new door opens straight up into a compact box, so nothing swings out over the driveway.

Are electric roller garage doors secure?

Yes. The curtain is made of interlocking foam-filled aluminium slats that run inside deep guide rails on both sides, there is no external handle to attack, and the door locks automatically each time it closes. The motor and the locking hold the curtain down against anyone trying to lift it from outside.
