Roller Garage Doors Great Dunmow

Great Dunmow is one of the closest towns to our unit, which makes a survey here easy to arrange. It is also three jobs in one as far as garages go: a tight old centre with almost no off-street parking, a wide ring of newer estate housing where a garage is standard, and farmhouses, barn conversions and cart lodges on the lanes around it. Made-to-measure insulated roller doors, a free on-site survey and a fixed written quote, fitted by our own team.

Roller Garage Doors in Great Dunmow

Roller garage doors suit the newer housing around Great Dunmow particularly well, because the curtain rolls vertically into a compact top box. Nothing swings out over the driveway and nothing runs back along the garage ceiling, so a shorter estate driveway stays usable and the space overhead stays yours.

Every RollRite door is made to measure from foam-filled aluminium slats with an insulated core, which gives you thermal performance, strength and quiet electric operation. Because the door is built to the opening we measure, an old brick barn or cart lodge on the lanes outside the town is no more of a problem than a square estate garage. Manual override is included on every door for power cuts, and the motor runs from an ordinary 13-amp socket.

Two slat profiles cover everything we see here. The 55mm profile handles standard single openings up to 2.6 metres wide, and the 77mm profile takes wider or more exposed openings up to about 5 metres. Both are available as a full electric package with remote control operation and a safety edge, or as a simpler external key switch package if you would rather keep the specification down.

55mm Roller Doors

Single Garages on the Older Estates

The late twentieth century estates around the town are mostly single width garages, often still on the up-and-over door they were built with, and that is where the 55mm slat does its work. High-density 12.5mm foam-filled aluminium slats give a strong balance of insulation, durability and smooth running on an opening up to 2.6 metres wide.

  • Foam-filled aluminium slats with a 12.5mm insulated core
  • Standard single openings up to 2.6 metres wide
  • Nothing swings out, so a short estate driveway stays usable
  • Key switch operation from £1,275 inc VAT, remote control operation from £1,475 inc VAT

77mm Roller Doors

Doubles, Cart Lodges and Wide Openings

The recent developments around Great Dunmow lean towards integral and double garages, and out on the lanes the openings on barns and cart lodges are wider still and rarely square. The 77mm profile takes openings up to about 5 metres on thicker 18mm insulated slats, with better wind resistance for a rural frontage that has nothing sheltering it.

  • Thicker 18mm insulated aluminium slats for strength
  • Better wind resistance on open, rural frontages
  • Suitable for double garages and openings up to about 5 metres
  • From £1,790 inc VAT with remote control operation, a 5 metre door typically around £3,000 inc VAT

About Great Dunmow

Great Dunmow is a market town in the Uttlesford district of north-west Essex, sitting between Braintree and Bishop's Stortford and close enough to Stansted Airport that the airport shapes the working day for a lot of households. Doctor's Pond sits in the town, and the historic centre carries a conservation area and listed buildings, which is what keeps the old core looking as it does.

The town's best known custom is the Dunmow Flitch Trials, held every four years, in which a flitch, meaning a side of bacon, is awarded to a married couple who can satisfy a court that they have not argued for a year and a day. Little Dunmow is the neighbouring village. Around the old centre the town has expanded a long way, with a great deal of late twentieth century and recent estate housing, so a short walk out from the middle takes you through several different decades of building.

RollRite serve homeowners in Great Dunmow, Little Dunmow and the surrounding lanes with made-to-measure roller garage doors in Essex. Estate garage, integral double or an old cart lodge opening, the door is built to the opening we measure.

Local Knowledge

What Great Dunmow Garages Are Like

The old centre is timber-framed and Georgian buildings with narrow frontages and very little off-street parking, so there is not a great deal of garage work in it. Nearly all of our jobs sit in the ring of newer housing that has grown around it. On the older estates that means single width garages, often with a tired up-and-over door that has to swing out before you can walk past it, which is the 55mm slat's territory. On the recent developments the openings are wider and frequently integral or double, and the heavier 77mm slat suits them better.

Out on the lanes it is a different job again. Farmhouses, barn conversions and cart lodges tend to have openings that are wide, old and nowhere near square, and a made-to-measure curtain is the only sensible answer: we measure the opening in front of us rather than fitting the closest standard size to it. Those are also the properties most likely to want a woodgrain or a muted colour instead of a bright modern finish, and there are up to 23 to choose from. Anything other than white adds a flat £100 inc VAT.

Stansted being up the road changes one thing that would sound like a sales line anywhere else. Plenty of people here work shifts or leave for very early flights, so how quietly the door runs at half past four in the morning is a genuine question rather than a detail. We do not publish a noise figure because we do not measure one, but a roller curtain gathering into a box is a different sound from a steel up-and-over lifting on a spring, and the motor starts and stops softly rather than snatching at it.

Roller Garage Door FAQs - Great Dunmow

How much does a roller garage door cost in Great Dunmow?

Fitted prices start at £1,275 for a 55mm door with 9mm slats, external key switch operation and manual override, and £1,325 for the thicker 12.5mm slats. Remote control operation starts at £1,475 with a hard-wired safety edge, or £1,575 with a wireless one. Single garages on the older estates usually sit in that 55mm range. The heavier 77mm profile starts at £1,790 and suits the wider openings on the newer developments, and a 5 metre wide door is typically around £3,000. Any colour other than white adds a flat £100. All prices include VAT.

Can you fit a roller door to a cart lodge or a barn conversion?

Usually yes, and it is a regular job on the lanes around the town. Those openings tend to be wide, old and nowhere near square, which is exactly why every door is made to measure: we work from the opening in front of us rather than the nearest standard size. A wide opening normally means the 77mm profile, which covers up to about 5 metres, and a 5 metre door is typically around £3,000 inc VAT, fully fitted. We do need roughly 75mm clear each side for the runners and 205mm to 300mm above the opening.

Will the door be quiet enough for a very early start?

That question comes up more here than in most towns, with Stansted close by and a lot of people leaving before dawn or working shifts. We will not quote you a decibel figure, because we do not measure one. What we can say is that a roller curtain gathers into a box above the opening instead of a steel panel lifting on a spring track, the motor starts and stops softly rather than snatching, and the whole cycle is short. If that is your main concern, raise it at the survey.

Which villages around Great Dunmow do you cover?

Great Dunmow is one of the closest towns on our list. Braintree is about fifteen minutes from our unit at Sible Hedingham and Great Dunmow is a little beyond it, so arranging a survey here is straightforward. We cover Little Dunmow next door, along with Braintree, Saffron Walden, Bishop's Stortford and Chelmsford, and the farms and lanes in between. If you are on an unnamed lane outside the town, call 01376 800 750 and we will confirm before you spend any time on it.

Do I need planning permission in Great Dunmow?

Replacing an existing garage door is normally permitted development, so no application is needed. The council here is Uttlesford District Council. The historic centre of Great Dunmow has a conservation area and listed buildings, and out on the lanes a barn conversion or a farm building can be listed too, which catches people out. If either applies to your property, check with the council before ordering, because the door is made for your opening. We will flag it at the free survey if we think it is relevant.
