About Saffron Walden
Saffron Walden is a historic market town in the Uttlesford district of north-west Essex, situated roughly 43 miles north of London and 15 miles south of Cambridge. With a population of around 17,000, the town takes its name from the saffron crocus that was once grown extensively in the area. St Mary the Virgin is the largest parish church in Essex, with the tallest spire in the county at 193 feet. The ruins of the twelfth-century Walden Castle and nearby turf maze add to the town's medieval character.
Saffron Walden is well connected by road via junction 9 of the M11 motorway. Bridge End Gardens, a restored collection of seven interlinked gardens including a hedge maze and walled garden, is a popular local attraction. Housing ranges from timber-framed medieval buildings and Georgian townhouses in the centre to modern family homes on the outskirts, making it one of the most sought-after market towns on the Essex-Cambridgeshire border.
