Insulated Roller Garage Doors Essex

Every roller garage door RollRite fit is insulated: double-walled aluminium slats with a foam core, sealed in guide rails at the sides and a rubber seal along the bottom, made to measure so there are no gaps around the edges. We supply and install them across Essex from Sible Hedingham, with a free on-site survey, a fixed written quote and most single doors fitted in one visit.

How the Insulation Works

A roller door curtain is made of horizontal aluminium slats that interlock and roll around a barrel above the opening. On an insulated door each slat is double walled: two aluminium skins with high-density, CFC-free foam filling the gap between them. Aluminium on its own conducts heat quickly, so a bare metal door gets as cold as the outside air. The foam core slows that transfer right down, so far less warmth passes through the closed curtain.

The slats sit inside deep guide rails on both sides, a rubber seal on the bottom slat closes the gap to the floor, and because the door is made to measure there is no oversized opening for cold air to pour through around the edges. Draughts are usually the change people notice first.

  • 55mm profile: 12.5mm high-density foam core, single garages up to about 2.6 metres
  • 77mm profile: 18mm foam core, double garages and exposed openings up to around 5 metres
  • Powder-coated aluminium skins that resist fading, scratching and weathering
  • Guide rails and bottom seal that close the gaps an old single-skin door leaves open

An Honest Answer

What You Will Actually Notice

An insulated roller door makes a garage noticeably less cold in winter, mainly by stopping draughts and taking the chill off the largest surface in the room, and it helps keep the space cooler on hot days. What it will not do is bring an unheated garage up to living-room temperature: for that you would need insulated walls, a decent roof and some form of heating. The door is the sensible first step because it addresses the biggest opening. How much you feel depends on the garage.

  • Integral garage under or beside living space: a large difference, because the garage shares walls or ceilings with heated rooms
  • Attached single-skin garage: a moderate difference, as draughts drop sharply once the biggest opening is sealed
  • Detached single-skin garage: fewer draughts and less condensation on cold surfaces, with the walls and roof still doing most of the heat loss

Why Choose an Insulated Roller Door

Fewer Draughts

Sealed guide rails, a bottom seal and a made-to-measure curtain close the gaps an old door leaves open.

A Usable Garage

Workshop, gym, utility room or store: the space is less raw in January and less of an oven in July.

Protects the House

On an integral garage, less heat is pulled out of the rooms above and beside it through a cold garage.

Quieter Too

Foam-filled slats damp rattle and road noise as well as heat loss, and the motor has a soft start and stop.

Secure by Design

Interlocking slats in deep guides, no external handle and automatic locking on every remote package.

Up to 23 Colours

White as standard, or anthracite, greens, blues, browns and woodgrain finishes to suit the house.

55mm or 77mm: Which Is Warmer

The 77mm slat carries 18mm of insulation against 12.5mm in the 55mm slat, so it is the warmer of the two and the one we recommend for double garages, wide single openings and exposed sites where wind resistance matters. That does not make it the right answer for every garage. On a standard single opening up to about 2.6 metres the 55mm door is the better fit: its compact housing sits under a low lintel, the curtain is lighter, and the insulation is still a world away from a single-skin metal door.

We measure the opening, headroom and side room at the free survey and recommend one or the other. The 55mm vs 77mm guide sets the two side by side.

Draughts, Seals and Guide Rails

An old single-skin metal door is a poor barrier in two ways. The sheet itself sits at outside temperature, and the gaps around its edges let a steady stream of cold air move through the garage. Replace it with an insulated, made-to-measure roller door and you deal with the worst offender in one go: the curtain resists heat loss and the seals close the gaps.

The curtain runs inside guide rails fixed to each side of the reveal, the housing sits tight against the lintel, and a rubber seal along the bottom slat meets the floor when the door closes. The rest of the structure still matters, which is why we are careful about what we promise, but the door is the one part of a garage you can upgrade in half a day.

Insulated Roller Garage Door Prices

Insulation is not an optional extra on a RollRite door, so the price is simply the fully fitted price of the door, including VAT. The 55mm range starts from £1,275 for a 9mm slat door with external key switch operation, or £1,325 with the 12.5mm high-density slat. Remote control packages with two handheld remotes and a safety edge start from £1,475.

The 77mm range, with the thickest insulation, starts from £1,790 inc VAT, and a 5-metre wide 77mm door is typically around £3,000 inc VAT, fully fitted. White is the standard finish and any other colour adds a flat £100. The cost calculator prices your own width in a couple of minutes, and the free survey turns that into a fixed written quote.

Insulated Roller Garage Door FAQs

Are roller garage doors insulated?

RollRite roller garage doors are. Every slat is double walled: two aluminium skins with a high-density, CFC-free foam core between them. The 55mm profile carries a 12.5mm core and the 77mm profile an 18mm core. A bare single-skin metal door sits at outside temperature; the foam core slows heat transfer through the closed curtain right down.

Will an insulated roller garage door keep my garage warm?

It will make the garage noticeably less cold, mainly by stopping draughts and taking the chill off the largest surface in the room, and it helps keep the space cooler in summer. It will not turn an unheated, uninsulated garage into a warm room on its own: heat still escapes through single-skin walls and a thin roof. The door is the sensible first step because it deals with the biggest opening.

Which is more insulated, a 55mm or a 77mm roller door?

The 77mm profile, with 18mm of foam in each slat against 12.5mm in the 55mm profile. The 55mm door is the right choice for standard single garages up to about 2.6 metres wide, where its compact housing fits under a low lintel. The 77mm door is built for double garages and exposed openings up to around 5 metres, where the thicker slat also gives better wind resistance.

Is an insulated door worth it on a detached garage?

It depends what the garage is for. On a detached single-skin garage used only for a car, the main gains are fewer draughts, less condensation on cold surfaces and a door that is quiet and secure. If you use the garage as a workshop, gym or store for anything sensitive to cold and damp, the insulated curtain makes a bigger difference. Integral and attached garages gain the most because they share walls with heated rooms.

How much does an insulated roller garage door cost in Essex?

Every RollRite door is insulated, so the price is the fully fitted price of the door itself: from £1,275 including VAT for a 55mm door with key switch operation, from £1,475 for a remote control package with a safety edge, and from £1,790 for the 77mm profile. A 5-metre wide 77mm door is typically around £3,000. Any colour other than white adds a flat £100. All prices include VAT.

Do you fit insulated roller doors in the villages, not just the towns?

Yes. RollRite are based in Sible Hedingham and fit doors across the whole of Essex, including the villages around Halstead, Braintree, Colchester, Chelmsford and Saffron Walden, plus parts of Suffolk, Hertfordshire and east London. Castle Hedingham, Gosfield, Great Yeldham, Finchingfield, Earls Colne and Coggeshall are all a short drive from the unit.
