Automatic Garage Doors in Maldon

Maldon's housing runs from weatherboarded cottages and Georgian frontages in the old town to modern estates at Heybridge, and very few of its garages were built with today's cars in mind. We replace tired up-and-over and manual doors with made-to-measure automatic roller doors that open straight up, take no room on the drive and stand up to the damp air off the Blackwater. Free on-site survey, fixed written quote, fitted by our own team from Sible Hedingham, about half an hour away.

Fully Fitted Roller Garage Doors Maldon

Roller garage doors are the ideal choice for Maldon homeowners where driveway space is limited or ceiling height inside the garage needs to stay clear. The curtain rolls vertically into a compact top box, leaving the full width and height of the opening available for access.

Every Rollrite roller door is made to measure using foam-filled aluminium slats with an insulated core. This provides thermal performance, strength and quiet electric operation. The motor, remote controls, safety edge and manual override are all included as standard.

We offer two slat profiles to suit different garage sizes. The 55mm profile is designed for standard single openings up to 2.6 metres wide, while the 77mm profile handles wider or more exposed openings up to 5 metres. Both come with a full electric package, including two remote controls, a safety edge and automatic locking.

About Maldon

Maldon is one of the oldest towns in Essex, standing on a hill above the Blackwater Estuary roughly 10 miles east of Chelmsford, with a population of around 15,000 in the parish and 23,000 in the wider built-up area that includes Heybridge. It is the seat of Maldon District and a town with a very long memory: the Battle of Maldon was fought against Viking raiders by the causeway to Northey Island in 991, and a statue of Byrhtnoth, the Saxon earl who fell there, looks out over the water from the end of Promenade Park. Maldon Sea Salt has been harvested from the estuary since 1882, and the traditional Thames sailing barges moored at Hythe Quay are still the town's signature view.

The High Street follows the ridge above the river, past the 15th-century Moot Hall, and All Saints' Church on it has the only triangular church tower in England. Much of that street and the old town around it is a conservation area, thick with timber-framed, Georgian and weatherboarded buildings, with Victorian terraces on the slopes below and interwar and post-war homes along the approach roads. The railway closed in the 1960s, so commuters drive to Hatfield Peverel or Witham for the main line, and most newer building has gone to the edges: estates at Heybridge, where the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation meets the estuary at Heybridge Basin, and recent development on the town's southern and western fringes. Promenade Park and the Blackwater Leisure Centre sit down by the waterfront.

Rollrite serve homeowners across Maldon, Heybridge and the wider district with professional roller garage doors in Essex. From a weatherboarded cottage near the Hythe to a new build on the edge of town, our made-to-measure doors are built to fit the opening you actually have.

Local Knowledge

What Maldon Garages Are Usually Like

The old town barely has garages at all. The streets around the High Street, Market Hill and the Hythe were laid out centuries before cars, so parking there is on the street and any garage tends to be a later addition squeezed into a back plot: narrow, short on headroom and awkward for anything that swings outward. Those openings are 55mm territory. The curtain rolls into a compact box that needs as little as 205mm above the opening, and the whole ceiling stays clear.

Heybridge and the newer edges of town are a different job. The estates there have proper single and double garages, some integral to the house, usually with short driveways where an up-and-over door takes the parking space in front. A roller door opens vertically and takes none of it. Wider double openings, and there are plenty on the recent developments, call for the thicker 77mm slat, which also brings better wind resistance.

Exposure is the local factor most towns do not have. Wind comes straight up the Blackwater, and garages facing the estuary catch it broadside, which is exactly what the 77mm profile is built for. On period frontages inside the conservation area, colour matters as much as strength: a woodgrain finish or a muted green or black sits far more naturally against brick and weatherboard than bright white, and our guide to choosing roller garage door colours walks through the options.

Roller Garage Door FAQs - Maldon

How much does an automatic garage door cost in Maldon?

A fully installed automatic roller garage door in Maldon typically runs between £1,275 and £4,000. The narrow single garages tucked behind the old town and its Victorian terraces usually sit in the lower half of that range, while the wider double openings on the newer estates at Heybridge and on the edges of town sit higher. The survey measures your opening and the written quote is fixed.

Will the estuary air damage an aluminium roller door?

It is a fair question this close to the Blackwater, but aluminium handles damp, salty air far better than timber or bare steel. The slats are foam-filled aluminium with a factory-applied finish, so there is nothing to rot or warp, and an occasional rinse with fresh water keeps salt from dulling the surface. For openings that face the water and catch the wind, the thicker 77mm slat gives better wind resistance.

My house is in the Maldon conservation area. Can I still have a roller door?

Usually yes. Replacing an existing garage door normally falls under permitted development, but a large part of the High Street and the old town sits within a conservation area and Maldon has plenty of listed buildings, so if your property is one of them it is worth a call to Maldon District Council first. A woodgrain finish or a muted colour tends to sit far more comfortably on a period frontage than a bright modern one, and we can talk through both at the free survey.

Do you cover Heybridge and the villages around Maldon?

Yes. Alongside Maldon itself we survey and install in Heybridge, Heybridge Basin, Langford, Goldhanger and Tollesbury, and south towards the villages of the Dengie peninsula. The team travel from Sible Hedingham, roughly half an hour away, so a Maldon visit is a routine part of the working week rather than a special trip.

My garage is a tight single with very little headroom. Will an automatic door fit?

Very likely. A lot of the garages we measure in Maldon were added beside or behind older properties long after they were built, so they are narrow and short on headroom. A roller door needs roughly 75mm clear on each side and between 205mm and 300mm above the opening, and because the curtain rolls into a compact box rather than running back on ceiling tracks, the full ceiling stays free for storage. If the headroom genuinely is not there, we say so at the survey rather than force a door in.
