About Maldon
Maldon is a historic town on the Blackwater Estuary in Essex, roughly 10 miles east of Chelmsford. With a population of around 15,000 in the parish and 23,000 in the wider built-up area, it serves as the seat of the Maldon District. The town is known for its rich history, including the Battle of Maldon in 991 AD, and for Maldon Sea Salt, which is still produced locally. Hythe Quay on the Chelmer and Blackwater waterfront is home to a collection of traditional Thames sailing barges.
Maldon sits at the starting point of the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation, connecting the town to Chelmsford by waterway. The town centre has a traditional high street with independent shops and period buildings. Housing ranges from character properties in the old town to modern estates on the outskirts. The Blackwater Leisure Centre provides swimming, gym and sports facilities for the local community.
