About Southend-on-Sea
Southend-on-Sea is a seaside city on the north bank of the Thames Estuary and the largest settlement in Essex, with a population of around 180,000. Granted city status in 2022, it has been a popular coastal resort since the 18th century, and its pier remains the longest pleasure pier in the world, stretching more than a mile into the estuary with its own railway running the length of it. Adventure Island sits at the pier's landward end, the High Street climbs from Pier Hill up to the Victoria shopping centre, and the original village of Prittlewell survives inland around Priory Park, where the medieval Prittlewell Priory is now a museum.
The seaside shaped the housing. Victorian and Edwardian terraces run back from the front through the centre, Westcliff-on-Sea and Chalkwell, built tight to the street with little off-street parking. Further out the pattern loosens into interwar and post-war semis through Southchurch, Prittlewell and Eastwood, wide avenues of detached homes at Thorpe Bay, and Leigh-on-Sea rising from the cockle sheds of Old Leigh to the shops along the Broadway. Two rail lines run to London, with c2c services to Fenchurch Street along the estuary and Greater Anglia services from Southend Victoria to Liverpool Street, and London Southend Airport sits on the northern edge of the city.
