About Clacton-on-Sea
Clacton-on-Sea is a seaside town on the Tendring Peninsula in Essex, situated roughly 77 miles north-east of London and 16 miles south-east of Colchester. With a population of around 53,000, it is the largest town in the Tendring District. The resort developed from the 1870s around Clacton Pier, which opened in 1871 as a landing stage for goods and passengers and remains a popular attraction on the seafront today.
The town is served by Clacton-on-Sea railway station on the Sunshine Coast Line, providing direct services to Colchester and London Liverpool Street. Sandy beaches, traditional seafront gardens and an active high street give Clacton a distinctive coastal character. Housing includes Victorian and Edwardian terraces near the town centre alongside post-war estates and modern developments further inland, popular with families and retirees.
