About Leigh-on-Sea
Leigh-on-Sea sits on the north bank of the Thames estuary and forms the western end of Southend-on-Sea, which means planning here runs through Southend-on-Sea City Council. It is an old fishing town before it is anything else. Old Leigh, the historic quarter down by the water, still has its cockle sheds and a working fishing fleet, and the town has never quite stopped being a place where boats come in.
Leigh Broadway, the main shopping street, sits up on the higher ground, and the land drops steeply away from it toward the estuary, so a great many streets run downhill to the water. The housing follows that grain: Edwardian and interwar bay-fronted terraces and semis on narrow plots, with later housing further back from the water. Parking pressure is real on the streets nearest the Broadway and the station, and the air off the estuary carries salt, which is why old painted doors here rarely age well.
