About Waltham Abbey
Waltham Abbey is a town in the Epping Forest district, on the western edge of Essex in the Lea Valley and close to the M25. The abbey church that gives the town its name is its landmark building, and it is traditionally said to be the burial place of King Harold II. The streets immediately around it are the oldest part of the town, with timber-framed and Georgian frontages and very little off-street parking.
On the edge of the town the Royal Gunpowder Mills, a former gunpowder works, is now open to visitors, and the Lee Valley Regional Park runs along the western side. Epping Forest lies to the east. Around that historic core sits a substantial ring of twentieth century housing, mostly post-war estates, with newer development further out. Being on the M25 made Waltham Abbey a commuter town, and that is what you see in how hard the garage doors here are worked.
